LIGHTNING LOCATION IMAGES BY SAFIR

SAFIR (Systeme de Surveillance et d'Alerte Foudre par Interferometrie Radioelectrique) is a commercially available lightning localization and warning system based on the technique of VHF interferometry. Osaka University has been operating SAFIR since 1991 and evaluating its functions as a cooperative project with Kansai Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). In the beginning of the project SAFIR system performed with three detection stations for locating the lightning activity in Hokuriku and northern Kinki area where they have the winter thunderstorms quite frequently. After the success in the first stage, Osaka University and KEPCO reach the conclusion to upgrade the system and one more detection station was added to realize wider range observation. Thus the four-station SAFIR began to work since December 1996 with the coverage of both Hokuriku and whole Kinki district, as shown in the image below. We will provide monthly reports of lightning activity in Hokuriku and Kinki area on WWW. Several scientific papers were published concerning the system and the observation results.

We always welcome your comment on this project.
